Commissioned in Sikh Regt, was posted to 16 RR. He was awarded SC for displaying conspicuous bravery in Poonch Sector in Jan 2002. He laid down his life for the Nation while fighting with terrorists in Northern Sector. He was awarded SM (posthumously) on Republic Day 2004.

A life of courage, leadership and supreme sacrifice. In barely three years of commissioned service, Major Rajiv Kumar Joon earned both the Shaurya Chakra and the Ashoka Chakra — the latter posthumously. He served with 22 Grenadiers and laid down his life during a counter-insurgency operation in Anantnag on 16 September 1994, at about 24 years of age.
